Indigenous teaching and learning

The University has identified a number of attributes for all graduates including being attuned to cultural diversity and having respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge culture and values.  

An increasing number of programs promote this goal, preparing University of Melbourne graduates to contribute to Indigenous development in their future careers across the professions. Many of our students engage in projects and placements with Indigenous communities as part of their studies.  The value of the two-way learning that takes place as students engage with Indigenous community is life changing.

Initiatives to improve the quality of Indigenous teaching and learning and to extend the range of opportunities available to our students are a major priority under the Reconciliation Action Plan.

On country Indigenous learning celebrates a milestone

A pioneering University of Melbourne indigenous learning program which takes students out of the classroom and 'On Country' to learn about Aboriginal history and culture celebrated its 10th year in 2013.

The program was also the winner of the 2013 Rio Tinto Award for Innovation and Excellence in Indigenous Higher Education

Architecture & Building and Planning academic honored by Rio Tinto

In 2012, Dr David O'Brien, received the Rio Tinto Award for Excellence and Innovation in Indigenous Higher Education.  His contribution, the Bower Studio, engages students in building projects with Aboriginal communities to improve housing outcomes.
