Indigenous Employment

The University of Melbourne is committed to becoming a leading employer of choice for Indigenous Australians; we currently have over 130 Indigenous staff working in Academic and Professional roles. New staff are invited to join the Indigenous Staff Network, which meets on a bi-annual basis to support and connect with one another.

Our Indigenous employees can access the support of a dedicated Indigenous employment officer based at Murrup Barak, Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development, whose purpose is to make an enduring contribution to Indigenous Australia through the transformative impact of education and employment for Indigenous Australians who come to study or work at the University of Melbourne.

Indigenous Employment Framework

The University of Melbourne’s Indigenous Employment Framework 2018-2021 is the University’s key  driver for the advancement of Indigenous staff recruitment and retention across the University. The Framework sets a broad range of goals that the University aims to meet by 2021 and outlines the associated implementation plan.

Reconciliation Action Plan

The University of Melbourne’s vision for reconciliation is for a wholistic, inclusive and two-way relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians based on mutual responsibility and respect.

The first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) was developed in 2010 to provide a clear vision for the implementation of measures to contribute to reconciliation. The RAP is an evolving commitment; the most recent edition of the RAP was published in 2018 after extensive consultation with community Elders and University stakeholders.
