Diversity and inclusion awards and achievements

We’re delivering a range of initiatives around the University to build diversity, strengthen inclusion, and address barriers and disadvantage experienced by specific cohorts in our community. We’ll keep you informed of our progress and achievements on this page.

Recent achievements and awards

Throughout 2020 and the first half of 2021 we:

  • achieved Bronze accreditation for our first ever submission to the Australian Workplace Equality Index for LGBTIQA+ inclusion
  • were awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze Award for our plan to advance gender equity in STEMM disciplines, established an Athena SWAN Taskforce to implement this plan and progress toward an Athena SWAN Silver Award
  • completed a comprehensive review of University policies from a diversity and inclusion perspective
  • established 215 all-gender bathrooms across all campuses to improve safety and inclusion for trans and gender diverse people
  • administered the Gender Equality Employee Experience Survey 2021 under the Gender Equality Act 2020 (Vic)
  • revised the Equity Innovation Grants to provide funding for University initiatives focusing on low-socioeconomic status student entry, retention, success and completion
  • maintained our Respect Taskforce, which oversees strategies to further improve culture, policies and practices towards preventing sexual assault and sexual harassment
  • became a signatory to the Australian Higher Education Joint Sector Position Statement on preserving gender equity as a higher education priority during and after COVID-19
  • developed a ‘Joining Melbourne Module’ for students on Respect, Diversity and Inclusion
  • introduced diversity and inclusion into the University supply chain via subscriptions to Supply Nation (verified Indigenous businesses), and Social Traders (social enterprises) and provided awareness training to University staff on our social procurement strategy
  • joined the Racism. It stops with me campaign, led by the Australian Human Rights Commission

What we're working on

In the second half of 2021, we are working to:

  • develop and implement a new disability action plan
  • develop and implement a culturally and linguistically diverse action plan
  • improve data collection and reporting on diversity and inclusion measures
  • finalise and implement LGBTIQA+ and gender equality action plans
  • develop and implement a Student Wellbeing Framework
  • implement the new Gender Affirmation Policy and Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Policy
