Professor Ruth Fincher

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International)

Provides leadership across the University, with overall responsibility for strategic guidance and expert advice for internationalisation and global engagement. Supports the Vice Chancellor in leadership and management of the University of Melbourne.

Professor Ruth Fincher is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International), and Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor in Geography at the University of Melbourne.

In her long career in higher education, Ruth Fincher has held numerous senior positions at the University of Melbourne. She was President of the University’s Academic Board in 2013 and 2014 and Pro Vice-Chancellor from 2011 to 2014. She held the University's Chair in Geography from 2007 to 2015. In 2008 she led the establishment of the first of the University of Melbourne’s interdisciplinary, research institutes, the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute (MSSI). Prior to that, she was Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning (2003-2006) and Professor of Urban Planning (1997-2006).

Professor Fincher is a member of the Governing Board of the International Science Council and a past Vice President of the International Geographical Union. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Australian Geographers, and in January 2014 was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
