University of Melbourne and Indian industry leaders strengthen collaboration

The University of Melbourne welcomed a delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), bringing together 26 senior leaders from academia, industry and innovation ecosystems across nine Indian states to discuss opportunities for deeper collaboration between universities and industry.

With representatives from organisations including the Indian Institute of Technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, the Indian Institute of Science, manufacturing specialist Q&Q Solutions and software company Wipro, the meeting highlighted the strategic importance of partnerships in accelerating translational research, commercialisation and workforce capability for both Australia and India.

It also created space for researchers and innovators to explore what is possible when institutions commit to working together on shared challenges, such as sustainable agriculture, water management and health systems.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global, Culture and Engagement) Professor Michael Wesley said that the University’s partnerships with India reflect its commitment to being an inclusive, globally connected institution that partners for impact.

"By working with leading Indian institutions and coordinating activity through our Melbourne Global Centre in Delhi, we are creating opportunities for collaborative research that is purpose-driven and focused on impact,” Professor Wesley said.

“These partnerships give our researchers and students a global experience while supporting them in translating their research into real-world benefits.”

Mr Amit Gossain, Chairman of the CII Committee and Managing Director of KONE (India and South Asia) added: “This visit reaffirmed our shared commitment to deepening collaboration with a leading global institution. University of Melbourne is one of the top University’s in the world and we welcomed their focus on research partnerships and pathways that build capability for communities in both of our countries.”

The University has been building and strengthening these partnerships for many years. It has more than 80 formal agreements with 46 Indian institutions, and over 1000 co-publications with Indian partners between 2020 and 2025.

Working with some of the world’s best researchers in India, the University aims to continue to provide opportunities that make everyone stronger together.
