University of Melbourne Director of Museums and Collections, Rose Hiscock, receives 2023 Change-maker of the Year Award

The 2023 Change-maker of the Year Award was presented to Rose Hiscock, Director of Museums and Collections at the University of Melbourne, on Tuesday 10 October at the 2023 Victorian Museums & Galleries Awards.

Rose has made a profound impact at the University of Melbourne and the cultural sector nationally. Joining the University in 2016 to head the development of Science Gallery Melbourne, Rose's leadership extended to bring together six distinct venues and collections into one cohesive program whilst promoting ongoing professional development for her team members in the museum and gallery sector.

Rose has been instrumental in highlighting the University of Melbourne’s cultural remit through the development of the Cultural Commons Strategy, and the creation of innovative  new positions, such as the Director Reimagining Museums and Collections held by Dr Brook Andrew.

Her work has been integral to the development of new cultural venues and spaces such the opening of Science Gallery, the redevelopment of the Potter Museum of Art currently underway, and most recently working with Dr Vanessa Russ on the development of an Indigenous-led Place for Indigenous Arts and Culture .

Rose's passion for inclusivity in the cultural sector is evident in her Board positions and her efforts to involve young people in science communication. Her career shows a commitment to fostering a diverse and dynamic team, open communication and professional growth for a new generation of museum and gallery practitioners. The judges noted that Rose has displayed exceptional leadership, integrity and innovation.
