Nine University of Melbourne early career academics named as 2024 Young Tall Poppy Awards finalists

Nine early career academics from across the University of Melbourne have been named as finalists in the 2024 Young Tall Poppy awards.

The Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) presents the Young Tall Poppy Awards to celebrate emerging scientists who excel in research while promoting public understanding of science and appreciation of its importance to society.

The 2024 University of Melbourne finalists are:

  • Dr Renata Borovica-Gajic, (Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology) for her research into making data analysis more efficient and accessible.
  • Dr Laura Brannelly, (Faculty of Science) for her research on amphibian conservation.
  • Dr Dinh Bui, (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) for his research on chronic lung diseases, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
  • Associate Professor Stephanie Filbay, (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) for her research on anterior cruciate ligament surgery.
  • Dr Stuart Johnston, (Faculty of Science) for his research on mathematical modelling of emergent behaviours
  • Associate Professor Shuai Li, (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) for his research into genetic and other risk factors for cancer.
  • Dr Jason Ong, (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) for his research into evidence-based decision-making in response to HIV.
  • Dr Kylie Soanes, (Faculty of Science) for her research into strategies to promote urban biodiversity.
  • Dr Michelle Wille, (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) for her research into avian influenza and other avian viruses.
