Professor Frank Caruso named 2024 Fellow of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering

Melbourne Laureate Professor Frank Caruso FRS FTSE FAA has been named among the 2024 Fellows of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).

The Fellowship recognises Professor Caruso, from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology’s Department of Chemical Engineering, for his contributions to chemical engineering and applied science.

With 35 patents to his name and extensive experience in commercialisation, Professor Caruso’s research supports a range of technologies, including FDA-approved painkillers and antimicrobial coatings. His work spans numerous fields, from therapeutics for preserving hearing to the development of smart fertilisers.

Beyond his research, Professor Caruso has been an advocate for translating scientific discoveries into practical applications and has mentored a significant number of students throughout his career.

“I am deeply honoured to be recognised for bridging the gap between research and real-world applications”, Professor Caruso said. “This Fellowship further inspires me to develop technologies to address complex problems.”

Elected by the existing Fellowship based on various criteria, Professor Caruso is one of 32 innovators to join over 900 of Australia’s top engineers and applied scientists who have been inducted into the Academy for their exceptional contributions to Australia’s innovation ecosystem.
