IDAHOBIT 2020

IDAHOBIT, marked on 17th May each year, is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia.

This is a time to celebrate the resilience of LGBTQIA+ communities, while recognising that there is still a long way to go in the fight against discrimination.

It is a time for LGBTQIA+ allies to read up on why we still need to fight for our rights, to consider their privilege, to reach out and check in with the LGBTQIA+ people in their lives, and play an important and active part in the fight against discrimination.

This IDAHOBIT, the University of Melbourne Pride in Action Network is focusing on the importance of social connection, which is especially significant during this time of physical distancing.

Equality Australia has reported on the specific issues facing LGBTQIA+ communities.

While LGBTIQ+ people face many challenges from COVID-19 which are similar to others in the community, we are also likely to experience some unique and more acute impacts from COVID-19 as a result of discrimination, disparities and differences connected to our LGBTIQ+ status.

These include health disparities including mental health, potentially related to a sudden loss of community support and cultural spaces and barriers to finding comfort and connection with our chosen families; and experiences of discrimination which make accessing inclusive healthcare, support, services and information, and interacting with law enforcement, more challenging.

We hope that the following resources help our members to feel connected in this time of isolation, provide ways to get engaged and empower you to take action.

We encourage staff to take part in the upcoming online LGBTQIA+ awareness training sessions – you can find the details on TrainMe. (Students, we have ally training specific to you coming soon!)

Send us a photo!

We will be creating and sharing a video of our wonderful community celebrating at home. If you would like to be involved, please send us a photo or short clip of you and your household (including pets!) or online community wearing rainbows, dancing with your fans from Midsumma, or with a message for LGBTQIA+ communities for IDAHOBIT. Or share it yourself on social media using the hashtags #IDAHOBIT #UniMelbPride.
