University statement on teaching flexibility

The University has been transparent in its desire that high quality learning and teaching will define the institution, and remain a key strategic priority.

In ‘Growing Esteem – The University of Melbourne Strategic Plan 2015-2020’, a number of actions were outlined that would help the University achieve this goal.

The ‘Flexible Academic Program’ that has been the subject of recent online commentary is being established in response to these actions. Primarily, it is seeking to improve the student experience by providing greater choice and flexibility in how they access teaching.

This program is not being developed out of sight. Consultation with students will commence this semester, with student representatives already included on active working groups. The early feedback the University received from student representatives who were consulted on Terms of Reference for the Program have indicated that they welcome their involvement, and are looking forward to taking an active role in the potential redesign of academic program delivery.

While the University acknowledges that there is concern among some students about the program, rest assured that the student consultation period is just commencing and all students will be encouraged to contribute to improving the delivery of academic programming at the University.
