New study abroad opportunities announced for University of Melbourne students
More than 300 students at the University of Melbourne will receive financial support to understand part of their studies elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific region, thanks to the 2018 round of the New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants.
These grants were announced on Friday, 25 August by Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop.
University of Melbourne Provost Margaret Sheil said: “Studying overseas gives students a direct experience of living and learning in another educational environment, building transferable skills and knowledge that will be important in their future education and professional endeavours. One in five of our undergraduate students now take the opportunity to go abroad as part of their studies.
“The University of Melbourne is delighted that through these New Colombo Plan grants, even more of our students will be able to take advantage of the opportunity to learn with students in our region. We have received funding for double the number of grants available in comparison to 2017."
Programmes will be available for students to live, study and undertake internships in one of seven countries across the Indo-Pacific. These include:
- 20 creative arts students studying music in the Cook Islands through community collaboration and cultural learning
- 65 students gaining insight into Indian business and economic development
- 10 students undertaking management consulting experience in China
- 30 students from the Faculty of Arts studying contemporary Japan.
Students will be selected for the programmes through the University of Melbourne Global Mobility program.
