Sir Frank theorised that parts of our immune response that attacks foreign bodies is acquired throughout our lives and is not simply genetic. This has had major implications for many fields including organ transplantation. Sir Frank spent his career at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research and as a professor at the University of Melbourne.
