Sir John Eccles (1903-1997)

Award: 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
Awarded for: Discoveries concerning the ionic mechanisms involved in excitation and inhibition in the peripheral and central portions of the nerve cell membrane
Awarded with: Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley


Sir John was a pioneer in the field of neuroscience and received the Nobel Prize for discovering how nerve impulses move between cells via connections called synapses. He completed a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Melbourne in 1925, and went on to a career that spanned the UK, Australia and the US.
