Ashendene Press display

6 May – 15 November 2019
Library, Level 1

Realised by Old Quad with thanks to Rare Books, University of Melbourne

This display presented reproductions from key Ashendene editions, illuminating this golden era of independent early 20th century printing and the incredible variety contained within the University of Melbourne’s Rare Books Collection.

Ashendene Press is considered one of the finest presses of its time, standing alongside Kelmscott, Doves and Golden Cockerell presses. Founded by St John Hornby (1867–1946) at his “father’s place, Ashendene, in Hertfordshire” in 1895, the Ashendene Press operated as a small private press with very few staff.
