Academic Engagement
Both in its physical and digital forms, Multivocal is a platform for teaching, learning and research engagement for students and staff of the University of Melbourne. Beginning in 2020 through a long period of COVID-related exhibition closure, and continuing to the present day, students across a variety of subjects and disciplines have explored Multivocal virtually in academic contexts, undertaking research related to the core exhibition themes and content; developing work-related skills in arts management, communication and design; and shaping creative responses in media such as sound, video and text. With our ongoing experience of music in all its forms as the core theme of the exhibition, we are delighted to showcase the ways our community continues to enrich this story.

When only the walls can sing
When only the walls can sing was composed for the Multivocal exhibition by Professor Mark Pollard, Head of Interactive Composition. It forms part of his ongoing transdisciplinary research investigaing processes of reconstructing the familiar to illuminate new meanings and alternative experiences. It was performed live at the Old Quad on 24 March 2021.

Chinese Music Ensemble in performance
Students from the Chinese Music Ensemble breadth subject performed in a public concert led by Ensemble Director Dr Wang Zheng-Ting in May 2021.

Interactive Composition: Multivocal Responses
Interactive Composition students at the University of Melbourne creatively respond to the images, stories, themes and ideas of the Multivocal exhibition in a diverse range of contemporary short audio works.

Musicology in practice
Three Honours Musicology students were asked to reflect on their musicological research experience in their Honours theses, and contextualise it through any object or story in the Multivocal exhibition. The following videos were created by each student on this theme.

Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, Multivocal shut its doors to the public, but opened further digital pathways for engagement with students. Creation in Isolation
Faced with COVID-19 restrictions on physical learning spaces, a group of University of Melbourne Faculty of Fine Arts and Music students and alumni were invited to each submit original music and a personal film response to the experience of creating in isolation.
