Campus design and development

The campus will be designed to foster the interactivity that drives innovation, set within a vibrant and accessible public realm that will nurture a sense of community. The design development for Stage 1 is underway.

CAMPUS DESIGN

Designing for innovation means transforming traditional workplaces and academic campuses.

The innovation campus is open and flexible, providing places for people from a range of disciplines and professions to come together and collaborate.

Comprising a lively network of streets and lanes, maker spaces, workshops, laboratories, living laboratories and cafes, Fishermans Bend campus will be a globally-networked hub of knowledge and industry engagement.

PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

The University of Melbourne is following all relevant government planning processes for its proposed development at Fishermans Bend.

In September 2021, the Victorian Government approved the University's proposed use and development of the site at Fishermans Bend as a new Engineering and Design innovation campus, featuring large facilities for advanced manufacturing, fabrication, testing and prototyping.

FACILITIES STAGE 1

Purpose-built for the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, and the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.

Planned facilities will include:

  • Laboratories for research, teaching and learning, including heavy engineering and large testing and prototyping facilities
  • Workspaces for staff, students and colocated industry partners
  • Campus amenities including food and beverage options
  • A high quality landscape and public realm welcoming staff, students and the broader community.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Fishermans Bend campus will support a rich student experience, nurturing a vibrant innovation community on the doorstep of Melbourne’s CBD. With access to exceptional facilities, the best teachers, and real industry projects, students will gain hands on, practical experience to solve real world problems.  Opening in 2026, the campus will include a lively network of streets and lanes, workshops, laboratories, teaching and learning spaces.
