The Council of the University of Melbourne met on 7 January 2026 following the passing of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emma Johnston AO, from complications associated with cancer.

Chancellor’s Report

The Chancellor delivered a tribute to Professor Johnston. Council members reflected on Professor Johnston’s achievements and impact during her short tenure at the University of Melbourne.

Interim Vice-Chancellor

Council considered options for an Interim Vice-Chancellor to serve until a new Vice-Chancellor is recruited. Council unanimously approved Professor Glyn Davis AC as Interim Vice-Chancellor.

Recruitment of the next Vice-Chancellor

Council approved the engagement of Perrett Laver as the search firm to assist the University in recruiting the next Vice-Chancellor.

The next Council meeting will be held on 18 March 2026.
