2024 Midsumma Pride March

LGBTIQA+ UniMelb pride banner

On 4 February, 2024, over 150 students and staff gathered 'Together with Pride' to celebrate LGBTIQA+ inclusion at Melbourne's annual Midsumma Pride March. Spirits were as high as our community took to Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, led by the pop-tune-blasting Uni-grad brass band the Pride Cymbals and our extraordinary University Cheer and Dance Club.

If you'd like to participate in Midsumma in 2025, we'd love you to join us! It's a great way to meet people and feel part of our UniMelb community. Thank you so much to our volunteers, who made everyone feel welcome, showed them where they needed to be, made sure everyone stayed hydrated and handed out merchandise bags with Pride fans to keep everyone cool.

Please check back later in the year to find out how you can get involved in Midsumma Pride 2025!

LGBTIQA+ UniMelb pride banner

The University's Midsumma Pride banner design was created by Arnav Goyal, who is currently pursuing a Master of Architecture with the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning. Arnav is also a student casual in the University's Student and Scholarly Services team. In this role, he offers graphic design and event assistance for the Discover Unimelb program.

The banner incorporates a recognisable University landmark (the clocktower on the Parkville campus), the University's motto for LGBTIQA+ inclusion ('Together with Pride') and an abstract representation of the Pride Progress flag.

"I understand the importance of [designer] Daniel Quasar's [progress] flag," says Arnav, "with the arrow pointing to the right to represent forward movement for trans, nonbinary and gender diverse people, as well as people of colour. This leads to [designer] Gilbert Baker's original LGBTIQA+ pride rainbow flag. I wanted to knit the University community together through a single line to show unity and the University's desire to bring different communities together."

The design was incorporated into University merchandise, such as tote bags, stickers and fans, which were given to participants and volunteers on the day.

Arnav has also worked with the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences as a Students@Work graphic design intern. He thoroughly recommends other students apply for positions through the Students@Work Internship program for the wealth of opportunities it provides University of Melbourne students.
