Combining Assessment Types
Academics may design the assessment in their subjects such that different types of secure assessment are combined to assess the intended learning outcomes. Moreover, open and secure assessment types could also be combined to assess the intended learning outcomes. For example, a long-form, unsupervised written assignment could be paired with interactive oral assessment. Depending on the nature and circumstances of this combination the open assessment task (the written assignment) could be regarded as secure. The ways in which a combination of secure and open assessment might be used within discipline areas to assure the learning outcomes of the open portion of the assessment will be further explored in the coming months.
Asynchronous digital observation
Tools such as Cadmus, an online platform widely used in the University, which allows students to complete their written assessment within a structured, secured environment designed by an academic, will also be the subject of further investigation in the coming months. Combined with careful assessment design, including nested and progressive assessment tasks, the use of a controlled digital environment with progression analytics may secure some types of written assessment.
