Professor Gavin Buskes

Deputy Head (Academic), Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Melbourne


Gavin earned his Bachelor of Science (Physics), Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Hons), and PhD from the University of Melbourne and is currently Professor and Deputy Head (Academic) in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Previously, he served as Assistant Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Faculty of Engineering and IT and is currently serving his second term on the national executive committee of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education.

Gavin has taught a diverse range of subjects, from large undergraduate classes to Masters-level Electrical Engineering ones. His teaching excellence has earned him multiple awards, including the Melbourne School of Engineering Award for Teaching Excellence, the Edward Brown Award for Teaching Excellence, a U21 Fellowship, the GEM Scott Teaching Fellowship, a national Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, and a School of EMI Emerging Leader Award.

A dedicated scholar, Gavin contributes to engineering education research, focusing on innovative curriculum design, technology-enhanced learning, student engagement in large classes, and assessing and improving student idea generation. His work has been recognised with a Best Paper Award at the 2021 Australasian Association for Engineering Education Conference and the ELOS division Best Paper Award at the 2025 American Society for Engineering Education Conference.
