Allan joined the University as Vice-Principal (Commercialisation) in March 2006, also holding the position of Chief Executive Officer for UoM Commercial Ltd, the University's commercialisation company.
In September 2009 Allan was appointed the University’s Chief Financial Officer and in May 2014 the role expanded to Vice-Principal (Administration & Finance) and Chief Financial Officer. The expanded portfolio included human resources, property, sustainability and digital. Most recently, in December 2018 Allan became the Vice-President (Administration & Finance) and Chief Operating Officer (COO).
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides leadership to University operations and services, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and business needs, driving improved operational performance, and optimizing value through scale, innovation and transformation. The COO is accountable for the effective allocation of University resources, whole-of-operations planning, and the ongoing development of the Melbourne Operating Model and Shared Services Model.
The COO portfolio encompasses business services, digital and data, finance, legal and risk, operational performance, property, research innovation and commercialisation, shared services, student and scholarly services, sustainability and technology.
Prior to joining the University, Allan held positions as: Partner in the corporate finance group at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), specialising in privatisation and mergers and acquisitions; Finance Director of the local investment banking subsidiary of the Toronto Dominion Bank; and CEO of Gadens Lawyers.
Allan is a chartered accountant and a member of the Institutes in both Australia and the UK, and a member of the Finance and Management Faculty in the UK. He has a degree in economic history from the University of Birmingham (UK).
His company director experience includes the boards of various organisations in the private and public sectors, both in Australia and overseas.
