Professor Dyson joined the University of Melbourne’s School of Geography in 2016 (now School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences). She obtained her doctorate from the University of Cambridge and has worked as an academic at the University of Washington and the University of Oxford.
Professor Dyson is an internationally recognised leader in the field of social geography, conducting ethnographic research with young people in India and Australia on inequalities and social change. She conducts her work in India in Hindi and Garhwali, which she speaks fluently. She works across disciplines, is highly engaged with public and policy audiences, and produces outputs across a range of media, including award-winning films.
Professor Dyson has a strong commitment to improving the University’s graduate researcher experience. She previously Chaired the Academic Board Higher Degree by Research Committee (HDRC) in which she led a major review of the Graduate Research Policy and established regular faculty reviews of graduate research courses.
