University welcomes MAXONIQ to Melbourne Connect

Melbourne Connect, the University of Melbourne's new innovation precinct.

The University of Melbourne is delighted to announce medical technology company MAXONIQ as one of five new partners who will be moving to the Melbourne Connect innovation precinct in 2021.

The initial three-year partnership will see MAXONIQ (formally OMX Solutions) embedded within the precinct and surrounded by world-class researchers, startups, SME’s, government, industry, artists, and Science Gallery Melbourne in the purpose-built 74,000-square metre precinct located in the heart of Carlton and next to the Parkville campus and Biomedical Precinct.

The company, which was established in 2016, has embraced the 3D printing digital revolution and specialises in custom-made medical devices (CMMDs) for cranio-maxillofacial surgery applications with a growing portfolio of medical implants including a custom TMJ joint replacement prosthesis, bespoke plating systems, bio-models, surgical splints and guides.

University of Melbourne Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Mark Hargreaves said the addition of MAXONIQ to the Melbourne Connect community would help further the ambitions of this becoming the leading innovation precinct in the country.

"When we identified the types of organisations we wanted co-located within Melbourne Connect it was clear that MAXONIQ were a perfect fit, given their focus on digital innovation in medical technologies,” he said.

"They've been leaders in their field for many years now and we look forward to the opportunities that will arise from stronger connections with our researchers, startups, and students who all will be operating within the precinct."

Clinical Director and Founder of MAXONIQ Dr George Dimitroulis said Melbourne Connect’s proximity to the University and world-renowned Melbourne BioMedical Precinct were driving factors behind the decision and was looking forward to deepening collaboration between the two organisations with a long-standing relationship already established with the University’s Department of BioMedical Engineering.

“As an innovator of bespoke medical devices MAXONIQ thrives on connection to our clinicians and the broader network of relevant stakeholders. Melbourne Connect provides an ideal environment to support this connection to our collaborative partners,” Dr George Dimitroulis said.

MAXONIQ’s med-tech focus aligns to the precincts strengths across emerging technologies including AI, robotics, health tech, computer science, and cybersecurity, with the vision to build a digital and data powerhouse leveraging existing expertise from within the University’s Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology who is the precinct’s anchor tenant.

Melbourne Connect will also be home to the Complex Human Data Hub, Melbourne Centre for Data Science (MCDS), the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health, and the ARC Training Centre in Optimisation Technologies, Integrated Methodologies and Applications (OPTIMA), as well as a range of commercial partners who will be announced in the coming weeks.

Partners within the precinct will be surrounded by some of Australia’s most outstanding emerging entrepreneurial talents with the Melbourne Entrepreneurial Centre (comprising the Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP) and Translating Research at Melbourne (TRAM) moving their renowned startup programs to Melbourne Connect helping create a vibrant and thriving ecosystem and a diverse community of brilliant minds.

The precinct will also welcome Science Gallery Melbourne, part of the acclaimed Global Science Gallery Network, which will be a dynamic new model for engaging 15 to 25-year-olds exploring the collision of art and science, and play a vital role in shifting our understanding of science, art and innovation.

It will also offer accommodation for post graduate researchers and visiting academic residents at The Lofts @ Melbourne Connect, as well as offering co-working, retail, childcare, and a 3,000-square metre superfloor shared meeting and events space, which will be activated by a dedicated events and engagement team.

The precinct opened its doors on 15 March and is set for a major launch later this year.
