New Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences announced

Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences fellowships have been announced

Ten researchers from the University of Melbourne and our partner institutions have been elected as new Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) for their outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to health and medical science in Australia.

The new Fellows were announced in a ceremony in Brisbane on 12 October by the Academy’s Interim President Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO FRS FAA FAHMS.

The new Fellows include:

  • Professor James Best AO (Austin Health) for his achievements in the fields of diabetes, insulin resistance, lipid disorders, renal disease and cardiovascular disease risk.
  • Professor Catriona Bradshaw (Alfred Health) for her significant research into sexually transmissible infections.
  • Professor Shyamali Dharmage (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) is a world-recognised leader in epidemiology of chronic lung diseases.
  • Professor Martha Hickey (Royal Women's Hospital) is best known for her research in menstrual disorders and menopause.
  • Professor Michael Hofman (Peter MacCullum Cancer Centre) has revolutionised prostate cancer imaging and treatment through his research in radioligand therapy.
  • Professor Sant-Rayn Pasricha (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) is reducing the impacts of anaemia which affects more than 800 million women and children and is disproportionately diagnosed in low-income countries.
  • Professor Anne-Louise Ponsonby (Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health) is an epidemiologist and public health physician, with extensive experience in the design, conduct, and analysis of birth cohorts and trials.
  • Professor Ego Seeman AM (Austin Health) has provided expertise and research to the field of bone biology for over 40 years, specialising in the epidemiology, pathogenesis and treatment of bone fragility.
  • Professor Susan Walker (Mercy Hospital for Women) for her work on maternal foetal medicine and foetal surgery services.
  • Professor Andrew Wei (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) is an expert in the field of acute myeloid leukaemia and has contributed to regulatory drug approvals and clinical practice changes to improve patient outcomes.

The AAHMS are an independent, interdisciplinary body of Fellows – elected by their peers.
