Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Awards announced

The 22 University of Melbourne early-career researchers who have received ARC Discovery Early Career Research Awards come from a range of disciplines.

More than 20 promising early-career researchers from a range of disciplines at the University of Melbourne have received Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Research Awards (DECRAs).

This year’s DECRAs will enable the 22 emerging researchers from the University to develop and apply their skills on research projects covering topics ranging from supermassive black holes, to biases in the news, and automated security testing approaches.

This year’s University of Melbourne DECRA awardees are:

  • Dr Sonja Arndt (MGSE) - Constructing a framework for early childhood teachers' cultural wellbeing
  • Dr Katie Auchettl  (Science)- Awakening giants in galaxies: Using stars to probe supermassive black holes
  • Dr Annisa Beta (Arts) - Digital citizenship and girls’ gender empowerment
  • Dr Renata Borovica-Gajic (FEIT) - From data to fast insights: a database system for seamless data exploration
  • Dr Leon Chan (FEIT) - Drag prediction over rough surfaces using hardware-accelerated simulations
  • Dr Kate Dooley (Science)- Contested geographies of terrestrial carbon
  • Dr Maximillien Evrard (MDHS) - Deciphering the rules of T cell residency across intestinal compartments
  • Dr Lea Frermann (FEIT) - Identifying biases in news using models of narrative framing
  • Dr Victoria Garside (MDHS) - The dynamic interplay between the matrix and cell fate in developing heart
  • Dr Lucas Hackl (Science) - Geometric approaches to quantum many body problems
  • Dr Agathe Lisé-Pronovost (Science) - A new dating tool for Australia’s cultural and natural history
  • Dr Alice McGovern (MDHS) - New insights into how the brain interprets visceral and somatic sensation
  • Dr Marc Mierowsky (Arts) - Law, literature and naturalization in an age of empire
  • Dr Trang Nguyen (Arts) - Linguistic discrimination and migrant youth in regional Australia
  • Dr Erin O'Donnell (MLS) - Ending Aqua Nullius: Sustainable and legitimate water law in settler states
  • Dr Van Thuan Pham (FEIT) - Effective integration of human and automated analyses for security testing
  • Dr Thomas Schmidt (Science) - Molecular biosecurity: Genomic databanks for managing new pest invasions
  • Dr Jacob Shapiro (Science) - Geometric scattering theory, resolvent estimates, and wave asymptotics
  • Dr Ankur Singh (MDHS) - Social inequalities in oral health among Australian working age adults
  • Dr Perran Stott-Ross (Science) - Predicting the future threat of mosquitoes under climate change
  • Dr Luis Francisco Villalobos (FEIT) - Developing tunable nanoporous graphene membranes for resource recovery
  • Dr Joey Voermans (FEIT) - Measuring and predicting sea spray spume droplets in the field
