Professor David Ackland, Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) at the 2025 AOA Annual Scientific Meeting in Hobart.

The AOA is the peak professional organisation for orthopaedic surgery in Australia and has more than 2,000 members, consisting primarily of orthopaedic consultants and trainees (registrars) in Australian hospitals and spanning all orthopaedic subspecialties. Honorary Fellowships are awarded to scientists, medical practitioner, and distinguished public figures that have made substantial impact in the field of orthopaedic surgery, or other branches of surgery and medicine.

Professor Ackland has made a sustained contribution to orthopaedics research and research training, working closely with orthopaedic trainees, Fellows and consultant surgeons in his biomechanics research laboratory.

"Hosting and mentoring students and clinicians undertaking orthopaedics research projects here in the department is a great pleasure, particularly when the team is cross-disciplinary, bringing together engineers, scientists and orthopaedic surgeons," Professor Ackland said.

“The majority of our projects to date have been exploring the influence of orthopaedic surgery such as joint replacements, and joint reconstructions, on post-operative joint function."

Professor Ackland was a recent recipient of an AOA Research Foundation grant which is exploring the influence of shoulder reconstruction techniques on joint stability.
