Industry Fellow in the School of Computing and Information Systems, Dr Rod Dilnutt has received the Allyship in Equity award at the Women of Colour in STEM awards.

The Allyship in Equity award recognises a dedicated ally who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to supporting, advocating for and uplifting Women of Colour (WOC) in STEM. This can be through mentorship, policy change or advocacy.

The awards are hosted by the STEM Sisters, a community dedicated to nurturing, empowering and elevating Women of Colour in Australia’s STEM fields.

Dr Dilnutt has been honoured with this award for his outstanding contributions as an educator, consultant and board director of the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

Among his key achievements is the establishment of the Emerging Professionals Committee, designed to help students transition successfully into STEM careers. He also played a pivotal role in creating the ACS Diversity and Inclusion Council, underpinned by the ACS Ethics Pledge, to promote equity across the ICT profession.

One notable initiative has been the Migrant Partner Program, which connects the partners of skilled migrants – many with STEM qualifications – to valuable industry networks and support resources. In addition to his governance and advisory work, Dr Dilnutt lectures in the Master of Information Systems program, overseeing the learning journey of more than 600 students each year.

Accepting the award, Dr Dilnutt thanked his fellow finalists, colleagues and other advocates in the field who continue to push for equity. “I’m stunned and humbled at this acknowledgement,” Dr Dilnutt said. “As a consultant, educator and board member I strive to break down barriers and provide equitable access to every opportunity to prosper STEM professionalism.” “We have made great advances and there is plenty more to do – so let’s get on with it.”
