Recent Master of Architecture alumn Mingxun (Gary) Ma from the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning won the Graduate Award for his thesis design, The Park Home, at the 2024 INDE Awards. Mr Ma’s project presents an architectural solution to elderly homelessness in Shepparton, focusing on sustainability and community integration.

Employing hempcrete and recycled local materials, it underlines a commitment to environmental responsibility and resilience against flood risks.

“This recognition inspires me to continue exploring ways to make a positive impact on society, addressing urgent needs and improving the quality of life for those affected by the housing crisis,” Mr Ma said.

Mr Ma’s approach not only addresses the housing needs of elderly people but also promotes ecological building practices and material innovation.

By integrating communal spaces and reconnecting residents with nature, the design fosters social interactions and a sense of belonging.

The thoughtful use of materials signifies a shift towards more sustainable and inclusive urban development strategies. Associate Professor Rory Hyde led the studio that produced Mr Ma’s award-winning work.

Mr Ma said that the experience and knowledge he gained under A/Prof Hyde's mentorship equipped him with the skills and confidence to make meaningful contributions to the field of architecture.

“Gary’s design thesis project demonstrates how architecture can respond to the major challenges of flooding, homelessness, and climate change in regional Victoria. He continually challenged the status quo of how housing is built today, developing a new housing type, exploring new materials, proposing a new economic model, all brought together in a compelling design. A thoroughly well-deserved award,” A/Prof Hyde said.
