New Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences announced

Six researchers from the University of Melbourne and partner institutes have been elected as Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS), in recognition of their outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to the health and medical sciences in Australia.

The Fellows, who are elected to the Academy by their peers through a competitive process, were announced at the AAHMS Annual Meeting in Adelaide this morning by Academy President Professor Louise Baur.

The new Fellows include:

  • Professor Linda Denehy (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) for her pioneering contributions to rehabilitation in the fields of critical care and cancer.
  • Professor Sharon Goldfeld AM (Murdoch Children’s Research Institute) for her innovative program of work focused on sustainable and policy-relevant solutions that can eliminate inequities for Australia’s children.
  • Professor Paul James (Royal Melbourne Hospital) for his initiatives and international collaborations that have brought about significant changes in clinical practice and policy in heritable cancer investigation, diagnosis and management.
  • Professor Sarath Ranganathan (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute) for his research that has led to a paradigm shift in the understanding and treatment of cystic fibrosis.
  • Professor Julie Simpson (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) for her leadership in biostatistics and contributions towards novel treatments and disease prevention.
  • Professor Stephen Tong (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and Mercy Hospital for Women) for his work developing new diagnostics and therapeutics to tackle life-endangering pregnancy conditions, including preeclampsia, ectopic pregnancy and stillbirth.
