Associate Professor Shawana Andrews and Dr. Owen Bradfield have received 2022 Premier's Awards for Health and Medical Research,  which recognise the exceptional contributions of Victoria’s mid and early-career health and medical researchers to improving the lives of people in Victoria and beyond.

Associate Professor Shawana Andrews, Director of the Melbourne Poche Centre for Indigenous Health at the University of Melbourne, was named the Aboriginal Researcher of the Year. Associate Professor Andrews' research delves into the lived experience of family violence, with a focus on un-silencing and elevating the voices of Aboriginal women. Her work explores the pivotal role of cultural practice as a tool for engagement, resilience, and resistance. She is currently engaged in a cultural exchange with First Nations and Māori researchers in Canada (Turtle Island), further amplifying the impact of her research.

Dr. Owen Bradfield, a PhD student at the Centre for Health Policy in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, received the Health Services award. Dr. Bradfield, a medical practitioner and health lawyer associated with the Medical Indemnity Protection Society, is researching the critical role of medical regulation in patient safety, with a particular emphasis on the intersection between doctors' well-being and medico-legal claims, complaints, and disciplinary processes.

The University congratulates Associate Professor Andrews, Dr. Bradfield, and all the winners and nominees.

The 2022 Premier's Awards for Health and Medical Research celebrates the outstanding contributions of mid-and early-career researchers, and is funded by the Victorian Government in partnership with the Australian Society for Medical Research.
