Professor Russell Thompson receives two prestigious transport awards

Professor Russell Thompson from the Department of Infrastructure Engineering has received two international transport industry awards, recognising his contribution to the freight industry.

The Physical Internet Builder Award was presented to Professor Thompson at the 9th International Physical Internet Conference in Athens. This award recognises outstanding engagement and achievements in building the physical internet. Professor Thompson leads the University’s Physical Internet Lab, the Australian hub of a global research and development network transforming freight and logistic systems. The Lab applies concepts from internet data transfer to real-world shipping processes and the transfer of real goods. It is contributing to the smart interconnectivity of physical, digital and operational freight networks.

Professor Thompson also received the Official Medal of 20 Years Anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering and Economics of Transport, Maritime University of Szczecin, Poland, for efficient cooperation and support for didactic and research activities. This medal was presented at the 12th International Conference on City Logistics in Bordeaux, France. Professor Thompson has over 20 years of experience in freight research, in areas such as city logistics, physical internet, and resilient and intelligent transport systems.
