Professor Ying Tan named Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Fellow

Professor Ying Tan.

Professor Ying Tan been named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow of 2023.

Professor Tan was recognised for her exceptional work in rehabilitation robotics. A member of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Tan has made noteworthy contributions to the development of technology, with the publication of more than 100 journal articles and the issuance of more than $7 million AUD in research funding.

Since 2018, Professor Tan has worked with Softbank-backed Fourier Intelligence as co-director of the successful industry-academic joint lab to advance rehabilitation robotics technology.

She works with the company to develop technologies that aid people with movement disabilities, particularly those who have neurological impairments. Her team at Fourier Intelligence does fundamental and applied research in the field of rehabilitation robots. A successful commercialisation effort from the lab was the ArmMotus™ EMU.

The Australian Research Council named Professor Tan an Australian Postdoctoral Fellow in 2006, and a Future Fellow in 2009.

The IEEE recognises eminent scientists and intellectuals with a Fellowship for their significant contributions to research, education, or scholarly endeavours.

A select group of IEEE members are chosen as Fellows each year by the IEEE Board of Directors, the highest level of IEEE membership. IEEE Fellowship is widely regarded in the technical community as a prestigious honour and a significant professional accomplishment.
