Karen Dobson, Managing Director of materials science company Dow Chemical Australia and New Zealand (Dow), has been awarded the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology’s (FEIT) 2024 Kernot Memorial Medal for her contributions to engineering and sustainability.

The Medal, established in 1926 in memory of the University of Melbourne’s first Professor of Engineering, William Charles Kernot, honours distinguished engineering achievements and the championing of engineering in Australia. Previous recipients include notable engineers such as Sir John Monash and Sir John Holland.

FEIT Dean Professor Thas Nirmalathas congratulated Ms Dobson on receiving the Kernot Medal. “Ms Dobson is a remarkable engineer whose innovative work and advocacy for sustainability exemplify the spirit of the Kernot Medal,” Professor Nirmalathas said. “Through her leadership across diverse roles, she inspires future generations to pursue careers in engineering and emphasises the importance of sustainable practices in our industry.”

Since graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1986, Ms Dobson has carved an impressive career at Dow, holding a variety of technical and commercial leadership roles, including global roles based in Hong Kong, the US and China.

“Engineering is not just about technology. It’s about making a meaningful impact on society,” Ms Dobson said. “I believe we must ensure that the essential role of engineering, in delivering a strong economic future balanced with environmental stewardship, is understood. “I feel humbled and grateful for this award, and particularly privileged for having started my journey in this Faculty so many years ago.”
