University of Melbourne graduate researcher named AIRAH ‘Best Student of the Year’
Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology graduate researcher Poorya Shaghaghi has been named ‘Best Student of the Year in Higher Education or Research’ by the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH). Presented at the 2024 AIRAH Awards ceremony, this accolade is the highest national recognition for graduate research students in Australia’s heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry.
Poorya is a graduate researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s Fluid Mechanics Research Group and his research focuses on buoyancy-driven displacement ventilation, a special type of ventilation system that uses natural air movement, such as rising warm air, to improve indoor airflow.
This innovative approach helps reduce the spread of airborne diseases inside buildings, while using less energy, making it both safer and more environmentally friendly.
“Being named the top student in AIRAH's national competition is an honour that holds deep personal significance for me,” Poorya said. “I'm immensely thankful to the University of Melbourne for their unwavering support. Being part of a world-class research environment made this journey possible. This achievement is a shared one, and I hope it inspires others to persist in their passions and contribute to advancements in our field.”
Poorya credits his success to the guidance of his supervisor Professor Jason Monty and the support of Associate Professor Felix Hui and Dr Behzad Rismanchi, who endorsed his nomination. AIRAH is the leading professional association for Australia’s HVAC&R industry, promoting innovation, sustainability and excellence across the sector.
