University researchers win Victoria Prize, Victoria Fellowships for 2021

2021 Victoria Prize and Victoria Fellowship recipients celebrate with Matt Fregon MP, Member for Mount Waverley.

University researchers have been awarded the Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation and Victoria Fellowships for 2021.

The awards, delivered by veski on behalf of the Victorian Government, recognise leaders in science and innovation in Victoria and supports global connections.

The Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in Life Sciences was awarded to Professor Anne Voss and Associate Professor Tim Thomas from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), for their long-standing professional partnership and the delivery of a new cancer treatment strategy.

The Victoria Prize is worth $50,000 and is awarded for a scientific discovery or technological innovation, or a series of achievements that significantly advances knowledge.

Four University researchers were also named Victoria Fellows, each receiving a travel grant of up to $18,000 to undertake short-term overseas study to develop a commercial idea, undertake specialist training or career development not available in Australia:

  • Dr Alexis Ceecee Britten-Jones, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences;
  • Dr Xavier Hadoux, Centre for Eye Research Australia;
  • Dr Marios Koutsakos, Peter Doherty Institute;
  • Dr Ye Tian, Postdoctoral Research Fellow from the Department of Psychiatry.

Dr Xavier Hadoux also received the the Australian-French Association for Research and Innovation (AFRAN) Associate Award, delivered by AFRAN and the Embassy of France in Australia and presented by Professor Thierry Corrège, Sciences and Higher Education Attaché at the Embassy of France.
