The Faculty of Arts is thrilled to announce the winners of its 2023 Arts Alumni Awards, presented by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts the Reverend Professor Russell Goulbourne at a ceremony at the University on 31 May.

Awarded each year, the Arts Alumni Awards awards recognise the valuable contributions alumni have made all over the world across a range of fields, including the not-for-profit sector, government, education, business, arts and media.

University of Melbourne Associate Professor in Near Eastern archaeology Andrew Jamieson was presented with the Contribution to the Faculty and University Award. For the past three decades, he has participated in archaeological fieldwork in Egypt, Georgia, Lebanon, Syria and Australia, with a particular interest in preservation, salvage projects and post-war recovery operations. In teaching, Andrew's focus on object-based learning resulted in the construction of specialised laboratories in the Arts West building, which now benefit students across the Bachelor of Arts.

Jane Crawley, an industry and public sector leader who has worked across the spectrum of the creative industries, with a focus on the intersection between creativity, cultural equity, and social change, was recognised with the Leadership Award.

Amanda Mackenzie, CEO of the Climate Council, also received the Leadership Award in absentia, in recognition of her work as a prominent Australian environmental leader and public commentator on the climate crisis in Australia.

The Hon. Justice Susan Kenny AM was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to the promotion of judicial education, international judicial co-operation, and law reform in her role as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia.

Two exceptional recent graduates were presented with the Rising Star Award for Young Alumni.

Michael Lim, Founder and Manager of Beyond Value, was celebrated for his work focusing on social impact and making a difference to his local community.

PhD candidate Esme Louise James was recognised for her work in promoting history to a broad audience through her social media series Kinky History and its accompanying chart-topping Kinky History podcast.
