Six academics from across the University of Melbourne have received over $6 million in funding under the Australian Research Council’s 2024 Future Fellowships scheme.

Associate Professor Tim Adair, from the Nossal Institute for Global Health, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences received $1,182,069 to investigate advancing knowledge about life expectancy in Australia by strengthening the policy utility of mortality statistics.

Dr Andrew King, from the Faculty of Science, received $1,034,602 to investigate climate through using new earth system model simulations.

His project aims to fill a major knowledge gap using new earth system model simulations to investigate the evolution of regional climates, variability in the climate system and the likelihood of damaging extreme events under different net-zero and net-negative emissions scenarios.

Dr Stephen Muirhead, from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the Faculty of Science received $884,032 to deepen understanding of percolation models.

Associate Professor Jianzhong Qi, from the School of Computing and Information Systems in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, received $1,066,691 to develop next-generation spatial database systems for location-based services in sectors such as transport, urban planning and emergency management.

Dr Jordana Silverstein, from the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness in the Melbourne Law School, received $1,053,461 to investigate the intergenerational repercussions of statelessness.

Associate Professor Xingliang Yuan, from the School of Computing and Information Systems in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, received $1,066,792 to investigate leakage exploitation and corresponding mitigations for encrypted databases.
