BlakAbility team secures funding from National Disability Research Partnership
BlakAbility, an Australian Research Council (ARC), and University of Melbourne-funded project that aims to improve the lives of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people living with disability, has successfully secured funding from the National Disability Research Partnership (NDRP).
The NDRP facilitates collaborative and inclusive disability research programs through funding research led by and with people with disability.
The BlakAbility team, led by Associate Professor Sheelagh Daniels-Mayes from the Faculty of Arts, has secured $60,000 for their research, Barriers Within Bars: Indigenous people with disability in prison. Their research responds to the over-incarceration of Indigenous people living with disability and examines the unique challenges they face in Australian prisons.
Through working with advocates, families and former prisoners, their research will uncover gaps in knowledge and identify areas that need improvement. Building on insights from the BlakAbility project at the University of Melbourne, the findings will be used to shape better policies, programs, and future research to make life safer and fairer for this marginalised group.
