Health and medical researchers awarded NHMRC funding

2022-MDHS postgraduate health and medical research projects funded

Thirteen postgraduate researchers from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) at the University of Melbourne and affiliates have received National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funding to pursue research projects, to target pain relief to cancer patients, support global elimination of cervical cancer and to improve the safety of epilepsy drugs during pregnancy.

The Minister for Health Greg Hunt announced the latest round of recipients of the NHMRC 2021 grants.

Approximately $7.24 million of the fund will support early career training in health and medical research within Australia.

The MDHS recipients and their grant project titles are:

  • Dr Aaron Kee Yee Wong Personalising Pain Relief for People with Cancer
  • Ms Amelia Hyatt Determining health system and public policy elements for successful implementation and sustainability of cervical cancer elimination strategies
  • Dr Luke McLean Understanding response and resistance to immunotherapy in immunocompromised patients with skin cancers
  • Dr Yew Li Dang Using twin studies to investigate epilepsy aetiology and anti-epileptic drug-induced birth defects
  • Dr Julia Lai-Kwon The power of Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs): demonstrating novel applications of PROs in the care of oncology patients
  • Dr Ouli Xie Evolution of Streptococcal pathovars
  • Dr Jessica Fairley Unmet need in systemic sclerosis: defining the burden of arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death
  • Dr Gemma Reynolds High-risk lymphoproliferative malignancies in the era of novel therapies: Infection risk, surveillance and prophylaxis
  • Dr Garry Hamilton Radial artery conduits in coronary artery bypass surgery: the impact of prior instrumentation with a focus on the vascular biology and clinical outcomes
  • Dr Alexandra Stewart The role of cytochrome polymorphisms in primaquine metabolism and effects on its activity in radical cure of Plasmodium vivax infection
  • Dr Victoria Hall Defining host immune response and prevention strategies for viral respiratory tract infections in patients with haematological malignancy
