35 University of Melbourne researchers have received funding for health and medical research.

The University of Melbourne, along with partner organisations, has been awarded funding for 35 projects in the 2022 Investigator Grants scheme by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Successful University of Melbourne applicants come from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, and the Faculty of Science.

Key collaborating centres include the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Investigator Grants support the research program of outstanding investigators at all career stages. The scheme provides five-year funding security for high-performing researchers through salary and research support packages.

The funding will enable recipients to continue their significant work across a range of essential areas in health and medical research, with projects including:

  • Reducing antibiotic overprescribing in dentistry;
  • Lungs for life: a programme of clinical trials to improve respiratory outcomes for premature babies;
  • Harnessing innovative digital technologies to enhance youth mental health care;
  • Tools to curb drug resistance in malarial parasites;
  • Leveraging nanoparticle platforms to advance nanomedicine; and
  • An immunogenomic approach to breast cancer in young women.
