Lord Howard Florey (1898-1968)
The development of penicillin which started the antibiotic revolution is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever advances in medicine. Adelaide born Lord Florey was instrumental in developing the techniques to grow, purify and manufacture penicillin. He spent his career at the University of Oxford and had a long association with the University of Melbourne. In 1960 the Howard Florey Laboratories of Experimental Physiology and Medicine (now The Florey) was named in his honour.
