Engineering and design campus at Fishermans Bend

The University of Melbourne purchased a 7.2-hectare site in 2018 in the heart of the Fishermans Bend with the long-term objective of developing an engineering, advanced manufacturing, and design campus within the State Government’s proposed Innovation Precinct, a National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC), and the centre of Australia’s largest urban renewal and precinct for advanced manufacturing. The project was planned to have a staged delivery with major works on Stage 1A of the campus to commence in mid 2025.

In September 2025, after carefully reviewing the prioritisation of its major infrastructure projects, the University made the decision to pause the Fishermans Bend Campus project, to be reassessed as part of the development of the University’s next 10-year strategy from 2030.

The University remains committed to the precinct and this decision will allow it to better align with the timing of key government and industry investments necessary to develop the Fishermans Bend precinct.

Ground-breaking ideas to market-ready solutions

Our new campus will be a place for true experimentation and pilot-testing, at scale and in real time, where we can explore and expand the horizons of what is possible in engineering and design.
