Our Estate | April update

Estate Update | Strengthening Place and Community across the University Estate

This year has seen continued momentum and progress across our estate, shaped by University’s long-term vision for the estate and Strategy 2030. These institutional strategies guide how the University will steward its campuses, create future-ready academic environments and support excellence in education, research and the student experience. They emphasise the need to enhance academic spaces, make more flexible and efficient use of facilities, improve campus experience, invest in the ageing estate and foster new partnerships that advance the University’s mission.

This strategic foundation underpins planning for the Central Education Building, now progressing through early development. Designed to meet the most urgent education needs identified in the Advancing Students and Education Strategy, the building will provide a centrally located interdisciplinary teaching and learning hub that brings all faculties together in a shared academic space. It will support highly interactive, technology‑enabled learning at scale, with large flat‑floor teaching environments and integrated collaboration zones. By offering flexible, high‑capacity spaces, the building aims to relieve existing timetabling pressures experience by faculties, and strengthen the student experience by fostering engagement, inquiry and a stronger sense of belonging.

Several projects across the estate have also advanced in recent months. At Southbank, the renovation of the dance studio reached completion early in the year. The refreshed facility provides modern, accessible spaces that enhance the learning and performance environment for students, contributing to vibrant campus life and a world‑class curriculum consistent with the aims of Strategy 2030.

Progress continues on the Australian Institute for Infectious Disease project, where excavation and piling works are set to begin shortly. Engagement with partners remains strong through activities such as the AIID in Action seminar series, supporting the strategy’s emphasis on globally recognised research, networks and precincts and on partnering for impact.

The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery, completed in late 2025, is now fully operational. Its purpose‑built environment supports cross‑disciplinary collaboration between researchers, clinicians and industry partners, enabling discovery and translation that aim to improve health outcomes. This aligns with the University’s goal to lead with a future‑focus and strengthen research capability across key precincts.

Building 193, located on the Parkville campus, also reached completion late last year, delivering contemporary, flexible teaching spaces that support hands‑on learning and collaboration for the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. Designed with sustainability, adaptability and efficient space use in mind, the retrofit aligns strongly with the Estate Master Plan’s goals and the strategy’s commitment to empowering people and performance.

At Point Nepean, the Research and Education Field Station has secured planning and heritage approvals and appointed Kane as its main works contractor. A commencement ceremony took place late April to mark the beginning of construction on site, with Boon/Wurrung/Bunurong woman Aunty Sonia Weston providing a smoking ceremony at the site as well as an exchange of gifts from Traditional Owners to the Universities. The project will enhance opportunities for field‑based research and coastal teaching, strengthening engagement with diverse communities and reinforcing the University’s commitment to a future‑focused, outward‑looking research environment.

Collectively, these developments reflect strong, coordinated progress across the estate, guided by clear strategic direction. They demonstrate how the University is creating environments where students and staff can thrive, where research can flourish and where campus precincts continue to evolve in line with our aspirations to 2030 and beyond.
