Tuesday 31 March is International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV), a day dedicated to celebrating the trans and gender diverse community while also raising awareness of the continuing work necessary to eliminate discrimination and other barriers to inclusion in all aspects of society.
For the University of Melbourne, TDoV is an opportunity to reaffirm our support for our trans and gender diverse students and staff and our commitment to create a culture where everyone is welcome, safe and can belong. This is particularly important now, a time when transgender people are experiencing increasing marginalisation all over the world. We therefore call on everyone in the University community to show your support:
- Read and share Pursuit articles by Professor of Psychology Andy Perfors, Academic Lead, LGBTIQA+ Inclusion and Director of the Complex Human Data Hub:
My mixed emotions on Transgender Day of Visibility, and
Anti-trans attitudes have existed for years, but organised disinformation campaigns are increasingly driving them - Purchase and wear a University Pronoun Pin. Pins are sold at cost price (not-for-profit initiative) through the University’s Merchandise Shop (Parkville campus)
- Download the Creating inclusive environments for trans and gender diverse students guide (staff access only)
- Read the University’s Gender Affirmation Policy to understand your responsibility to uphold an inclusive learning and work environment.
