Sunday 31 March is International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV), a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of transgender and gender diverse people, while also raising awareness of the continuing work to eliminate discrimination and other barriers to inclusion within all aspects of society.

For the University of Melbourne, TDoV is an opportunity to celebrate the important contributions made by trans and gender diverse people at the University, and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a culture where everyone can feel welcome, valued and respected. We acknowledge the importance of visibility, but note that respectful behaviours are foundational to support trans and gender diverse people to be visible with safety. Please refer to the Gender Affirmation Policy for guidance.

We encourage all students and staff to learn more about trans inclusion by:

  • Attending the online event – What does Transgender Day of Visibility Mean Today? (details below)
  • Reading about the history, challenges and celebration of trans and gender diverse people in society, such as Transgender Australia, written by Professor of History Noah Riseman and published by Melbourne University Press
  • Completing the ‘Trans Affirming Workplaces’ e-Learn module (staff only).

Speakers include:

  • Lee Carnie (Foundation for Young Australians),
  • Witt Gorrie (Beyond Bricks & Bars: Trans and Gender Diverse Decarceration Project),
  • Jeremy Wiggins (Transcend Australia),
  • Dr CQ Quinan (moderator, Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies, Faculty of Arts).

This event is organised by the Faculty of Arts Diversity and Inclusion initiative and is open to all University of Melbourne staff and students.

To enquire about attending the event online, please email arts-diversityandinclusion@unimelb.edu.au
