Creative spaces reimagined at Southbank
A New Home for Film and TV
The Southbank campus has welcomed a new and upgraded home for Film and TV. The refurbished studios in Building 861 have now been completed, marking an exciting step forward in the campus’ transformation under the Estate Master Plan.
This project has delivered more than just refreshed facilities - it brings new life to the spaces where students and staff come together to learn, collaborate, and create. With a focus on functionality, accessibility, and connection, the new Film and TV studios have been designed to support the day-to-day reality of making creative work on campus.
“The refurbishment has breathed new life into our teaching spaces - it’s not just about a fresh coat of paint, but about accessibility, flow and function,” said David Balfour, Head of Film and Television in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music. “The work has made the building genuinely more welcoming and fit for the creative work that happens here every day.”
Designed for creativity and connection
A standout feature of the upgrade is a brand-new mezzanine floor above Studio 3, completed in late 2024, which now houses three purpose-built Animation Studios, designed to meet growing demand in this expanding field.
Across the building, teaching spaces have been reconfigured to improve workflow, circulation, and collaboration, with a focus on delivering more professional and industry-specific experience. One key addition is the newly created Green Room, designed to provide a welcoming and practical support space for students, staff and volunteers during production activities.
“The Green Room in particular improves how we support students while we make work on campus — a small but meaningful addition that makes the school feel more like a home for makers,” said Balfour.

A space for everyone
Making the building more accessible was a key priority for the development. The project has delivered full DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance, including:
- Step-free access
- Wider corridors and doorways
- Updated, accessible amenities
- Clearer wayfinding throughout
These improvements ensure that all students, staff and visitors can feel welcome and supported in the new and improved space.

What’s next?
This project is part of a wider vision to reshape Southbank into a more inclusive and connected creative campus. While the Film and TV upgrades are now complete, work continues on the Dance facilities - including new sprung floors, a lift from St Kilda Road and refreshed interiors.
Together, these improvements help to build a vibrant, accessible campus that supports the creativity and ambition of everyone who works and learns here.
