Chancellor’s Report
Council received an update on the ongoing government inquiries and consultations into university governance.
Vice-Chancellor’s Report
Council noted the Vice-Chancellor’s Report, which included updates on:
- The outcome of the Federal Election and the Federal Budget and the implications for the sector
- The University’s submission to the Expert Council on University Governance
- The implementation of the University’s strategic plan, Advancing Melbourne 2030 and a review of the plan’s performance metrics
President of Academic Board’s Report
The President of the Academic Board reported on the most recent meeting of Academic Board and provided an update on the Academic Board membership model review.
Committee Business
Council approved in principle the University’s draft 2024 Modern Slavery Statement, subject to endorsement by the Audit and Risk Committee. Council Committee reports were also received from the Finance Committee and the Human Resources, Remuneration and Employment Compliance Committee.
Melbourne Law School
The Dean of the Melbourne Law School presented to Council, providing an overview of the School’s activities and strategic objectives.
Strategic Plans
Council received updates from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) on the Murmuk Djerring Strategy and the forthcoming release of Dhoombak Goobgoowana Vol 2.
Other Business
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Chief Operating Officer presented to Council on risks and opportunities associated with Generative Artificial Intelligence tools in the University's teaching, learning and operations.
Council noted the 2024 Sustainability Report: Powered by Community and the 2024 Culture Cluster Impact Report.
Council unanimously approved the reappointment of Jane Hansen AO as Chancellor for a three-year term commencing on 1 January 2026 and concluding on 31 December 2028.
The next Council meeting will be held on 9 July 2025.
