IDAHOBIT 2023

Wednesday 17 May is IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia.

IDAHOBIT was first celebrated in 1990 in response to the removal of ‘homosexuality’ from the Classification of Diseases by the World Health Organisation. It has since evolved into an annual celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer and Asexual (LGBTIQA+) communities.

For the University of Melbourne, IDAHOBIT is an opportunity to recognise the important contributions made by LGBTIQA+ people at the University, and reaffirm our commitment to provide a welcoming, safe and respectful experience for all. Whether you’re a student, on staff, a visitor or alumni, the University values your unique perspectives and contributions.

Each year, the University installs LGBTIQA+ Pride flags and imagery across our campuses to celebrate the diversity of sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions in our community. This year, installations will be across all campuses and can be seen throughout the month.

University of Melbourne launches an LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Action Plan

On 11 May, the University launched its first LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Action Plan, which specifically addresses the unique challenges faced by students, staff, visitors and alumni who identify as LGBTIQA+.

The plan represents a coordinated whole-of-University approach to eliminate obstacles in culture, practices, systems and structures for LGBTIQA+ inclusion. The aim is to embed and advance principles of diversity and inclusion by addressing the unique challenges facing LGBTIQA+ students, staff and visitors to the University.

The plan has been shaped from a consultation process that brought together the lived experience of staff, students, key subject-matter experts from across the University community, and benchmarking against leading practice.

STEMM in COLOUR

Come join QueersInScience (QIS) for an evening of breaking down barriers with all topics on the table. Some topics will be curated by our mediator, some will come from our guests, and some submitted from audience members.

We have a wonderful collection of First Nations people and QTIPOC on stage who have been on the forefront of their fields as well as navigating the challenges within and beyond the queer community broadly. There is nothing off the table and we might even have a couple of performances (poetry and some songbirds) for the night.

The event runs with a 5.45pm set up and a 6pm start on Thursday 18 May at The Motley Bauhaus. All are welcome. Attendees can submit questions and topics during ticket purchase and at the event.
