New chair appointed for the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory

The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr Sue Barrell as incoming chair of the SUPL Board.

SUPL is the epicentre of dark matter research in Australia through its ground-breaking facility located in Stawell, Victoria. Dr Barrell is an accomplished executive and leader committed to delivering valued outcomes for society and the environment through science, technology and data.

Recently retired from the Bureau of Meteorology where she was the Chief Scientist responsible for Science to Services, Innovation, Global and National Relationships, and Diversity, Inclusion and STEM, Dr Barrell has made significant contributions to national and international efforts in climate science, policy and through board and advisory roles across science, technology and the education sectors.

She has represented Australia internationally and led high-level activities at the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO).

The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory is a publicly-funded scientific collaboration between government bodies, research bodies and institutions, and the local community.

Based one kilometre below ground in a working gold mine, this project is supported by funding from the Australian Government, the Victorian Government, and the Australian Research Council through a Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics.
