University of Melbourne climate scientists Dr Andrew King and Dr Hamish Clarke have been recognised for their research excellence in the Australian Academy of Science’s 2024 Honorific Awards.

Dr King, from the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is internationally renowned for his expertise in climate science and the effects of global warming on regional climates. He was awarded the Anton Hales Medal for outstanding contributions to research in the Earth Sciences.

“I’m honoured to receive this award and to be named alongside prominent researchers in Australia’s science community,” Dr King said. “It’s critical that we understand why and how climate extremes will change as the world continues to warm so we are prepared for extreme events. I thank the Academy for supporting and promoting research in this area.”

Dr Clarke, from the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences, is a leader in bushfire risk, fire management and climate change. He was awarded the Frederick White Medal, which recognises the achievements of scientists who are engaged in research of intrinsic scientific merit that has made an actual or potential contribution to community interests, to rural or industrial progress, or to the understanding of natural phenomena that have an impact on the lives of people.

“It is a great honour to receive the Frederick White Medal that recognises the positive impact of research on society,” Dr Clarke said. “Bushfire is a microcosm of our sustainability crisis. If we can learn to work together, across disciplines, sectors, knowledge systems and jurisdictions, we have a real chance of creating lasting positive change. That’s what inspires me.”

Dr King and Dr Clarke are among 22 of Australia’s top scientists recognised by the prestigious scientific organisation to celebrate the diverse contributions of researchers across Australia and the power of long-term commitment to science.

University of Melbourne Dean of Science Professor Moira O’Bryan congratulated Dr King and Dr Clarke on their outstanding scientific contributions to environmental research.

“These are prestigious awards and I’m delighted that Andrew and Hamish are being recognised for their early career achievements on a national stage,” Professor O’Bryan said. “Their work demonstrates the impact researchers can have to address the serious climate challenges our communities face every day.”
